| Sewage includes everything that goes down the kitchen, laundry and bathroom sink, as well as what you flush down the toilet.
Most of the sewage flows from your home to the Western or Eastern Treatment Plant, where it is treated to make it safe for release back into the environment. A small amount is treated at local treatment plants owned by the three retail water companies. The sewage is treated to environmental standards that are set by EPA Victoria.
Treated effluent can then be used as recycled water. Recycled water, because of its origin, is rich in nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus that are valuable for agriculture, horticulture and a number of other applications.
EPA Victoria has guidelines on how the use of recycled water must be managed. These guidelines ensure that recycled water is "fit for purpose". An application to use recycled water is undertaken through Melbourne Water, which then seeks approval from EPA Victoria. The guidelines are available from www.epa.vic.gov.au
Recycled water uses
Recycled water is suitable for a wide range of purposes. It can be used to irrigate grazing land and crops in horticulture and to keep our public parks, gardens and open spaces green.
Recycled water provides a number of cost-saving benefits, because it contains valuable nutrients and costs less than freshwater. Large water users can substantially reduce operating costs, and help, to conserve drinking water resources, by using recycled water.
