Water recycling can be used to help keep Melbourne's parks and gardens green |
Our strategy is based on recycling increasing quantities of high quality treated effluent from our sewage treatment plants at Bangholme and Werribee, therefore reducing discharge to Bass Strait and Port Phillip Bay.
Recycled water can be used for a wide range of purposes. It can be used to irrigate grazing land and crops, in horticulture, industrial processing, in new suburbs as part of water-sensitive urban design initiatives, and to keep our public parks, gardens and open spaces green.
The challenge for the Victorian Government, Melbourne Water and the community is for more potential major customers to use recycled water where drinking quality water is not required.
We are working to improve the quality of water available for recycling, and developing schemes with the water industry and Victorian Government to enable recycled water to be used by farmers, industry and local government.
Our strategy includes:
upgrading our treatment plants to improve the quality of recycled water
developing infrastructure and delivery systems
working with other agencies to develop environmental and quality management plans for recycled water use
promoting recycled water among potential user groups.
Water recycling schemes will help develop a new water supply with a locally controlled, reliable source. It is estimated that these schemes could generate economic benefits to Victoria of up to $590 million and create almost 2000 jobs during the next 20 years.
